Joining Hands Nepal

A Family Orphan Home

Thank You Bina Didi

It will be a bittersweet day tomorrow for us as our volunteer Bina is leaving us for new adventures elsewhere in Nepal. We will celebrate all she has given to the children and to us at the orphanage and express our gratitude, but we will also be sad to see her go. The children will miss her personal and caring teaching methods in their recreation and English conversation classes. But all good things must come to end, and the children have gotten so much out of her stay in the way of exposure to a new culture and new ideas. It is merely the first step on a long road to making them well-rounded individuals capable of achieving anything they wish for in life. So we would like to give our heartfelt thanks to Bina, aka Viktoria, of Germany for sharing her time and her life with us during these past 2 weeks, and we wish her all the best on the rest of her journey in Nepal and beyond!

Welcome Bina

We are happy to welcome Bina, aka Victoria, from Germany to the orphan home to be a part of the Joining Hands Family for the next 2 weeks. The children have shown no hesitation to embrace her and to make her feel right at home with us. Yesterday everyone got acquainted as Bina lead her first English conversation class with the children and taught them a little bit about Germany. This morning we all practiced yoga and martial arts together and walked around the old city and surrounding valley. From tonight, the children can look forward to having Bina take over teaching the English conversation class and morning rec class completely, and tomorrow she will start at the school, which welcomed her with a small but lovely program with flowers and malas and a special song performed by one of the students. We could not be happier to have Bina here with us, and we look forward to an interesting two weeks full of discovery and sharing. We are also grateful to our friends at Cultural Destination Nepal for making it possible for Bina to come and stay with us.

Big Sister

Big Sister of Joining Hands NepalWhat the children really need now, more than anything else, is love and family. Their birth families have been taken from them, abandoned them, or proven incapable of caring for them properly. It is here, in their new home, with their new family, that they must learn anew what love is, what family is. Placed in the role of teacher, our director Himal’s niece, Chhiring, has proved exceptional. She has been active in every aspect of the children’s daily lives, from helping them to bathe and brush, to joining them in writing and coloring, to playing and teaching games, and everything in between. But most important of all, she has served each day more and more as a model of how to behave, how to treat other members of family respectfully, and how to love and care for one another as if we were not all strangers from different parts of the country a week ago, but a close-knit family at long last reunited by providence. The children could not ask for a better big sister to teach them the meaning of love and family. That is why we prefer to think of this place we are building as a Family Home more than an Orphan Home or Orphanage.
