German Pancakes
To bring a sweet end to a day of new cultural experiences for our children, Bina cooked German pancakes for dinner topped with hazlenut nutella spread. It was an interesting adventure for the children, most of whom have never tasted non-Nepali food of any kind. As you would expect, several of the children’s reactions ranged from indifferent to completely unenthused, however some of the children enjoyed the sweetness very much and went back for seconds and thirds. Regardless of the variety of reactions, we know it is good for the children to open up their tastes and their minds to different things and broaden their understanding of the world. Perhaps next month or next year, after two or twenty more volunteers, the same children who made faces at the taste of German pancakes will eat a more exotic meal prepared by another volunteer and embrace it with big smiles. No matter what, they’ll have a lot more exposure than most children of Nepal, and that can only be a good thing for their future.
